What is a Whate Elephant Party ?

A WHITE ELEPHANT party is a fun evening. It is a way of disposing of something you have hanging around your home which you have never used, and (hopefully but not necessarily) going home with something you may actually use. It usually results in a great deal of fun and laughter as well as a few groans.

WHAT CONSTITUTES A WHITE ELEPHANT?

A WHITE ELEPHANT is usually something that was given to you as a gift but you have never used, for whatever reason. It could be something that you cannot use (such as a round tablecloth when all your tables are rectangular). Or a set of sheets for a king-size bed (but your bed is queen-size). It could be something you would never use (like gardening tools but you haven’t got a garden). Sometimes it is something you bought for yourself but when you got home discovered it was the wrong colour and by the time you got around to taking it back the shop had closed down! Or somebody gave you a very nice flan dish but you simply don’t need another one (you’ve already got seven, and in any case, where would you put it?) Finally it might be something you received once as a present and really don’t like. Remember, somebody else will find it delightful.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Don’t despair! Help is at hand. You dig out your white elephants and bring them along to our party. Wrap them up well so that they are unidentifiable.

ANY GROUND RULES? YES!

White elephants must be unused and of sufficient value that nobody goes home feeling they’ve been “done”. A white elephant must be something that somebody would like to have. You can bring as many as you like, but remember, if you bring 6, you will go home with 6! Couples should bring at least 2, so that they can both participate in the game.
